Specialty Award Judging

Each year BSSEF bestows approximately 20 Specialty Awards , i.e. Navy, American Meteorological Society, Mu Alpha Theta, etc.

Any adult with training in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics with a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent can volunteer to judge in Specialty Award Judging.

In most cases you will be judging alone to select the project that best fulfills the evaluation criteria outlined by the awarding organization. In some cases you will be paired with one or more colleagues … this is determined by the number of student projects that qualify for the award.

Often, a specific judging form from the awarding agency will be included in your packet.  If not, please use a standard judging form.

If you select this area of judging the judging chair will match the specialty category with your area of expertise.

Judging Process

1.  See Fair Schedule for proper arrival time.

2.  Collect information packet at registration table upon arrival. You will be provided with a clipboard or padfolio, category assignment, specialty judging criteria, and fair schedule. Please attend the judging orientation presentation.

3.  Immediately after the orientation you will review the student project without the student(s) present. Later, you will review the project with the student(s).

4.  Circulate among projects in your assigned specialty award category and complete an evaluation based on the criteria in your registration packet.  Engage all students if they’re in a team.  If you see a qualified project that is not on your specialty award assignment list, please consider it for your award.

5.  Return all scoresheets and evaluation forms to the judging table.
